What is LSIS 5700, Independent Study?
Independent Study is meant for students who want to study specific topics that are not offered in the curriculum or students who want to study a specific topic in more depth than is offered in the curriculum. It is the responsibility of the student to propose a topic and find a faculty member. Independent Study should not be used to replace a course that is in the curriculum, particularly a core course. Generally, students may not take more than one Independent Study.

One of the required courses is not being offered at a convenient time. May I take Independent Study instead?
No. Independent Study (LSIS 5700) cannot be used to replace a required course.
What is LSIS 5900, Thesis?
Thesis is meant for students who want to study specific topics that are not offered in the curriculum or students who want to study a specific topic in more depth than is offered in the curriculum. It is the responsibility of the student to propose a topic and find a faculty member. The thesis option requires more work than an independent study.

Three people are required for a student's thesis committee -- the advisor, someone from the student's major area, and someone from the student's minor area.

The Thesis form at http://www.nccu.edu/_files/documents/PlanoftheThesisorProject.pdf must also be completed, and the student's thesis project must be approved by the Graduate Council.
