B. Accidental Serialists: Recruiting for the Future

Our profession depends on recruiting new serialists, including some who never expected to work in this area. A panel composed of Library Science students, working paraprofessionals, and professionals will share experiences and expectations that helped attract them to the field.

C. The Expanding Role of Serials Paraprofessionals

Paraprofessional serials staff now perform more diverse tasks than ever before, including many responsibilities formerly done by professional staff. A Personnel Librarian and a Serials Librarian reflect on the changing nature of this work and how these changes affect the job market and recruiting. They also offer proven strategies for rewriting job descriptions for position studies.

Sharon Bullard, UNC-Greensboro / Jackson Library
Christie Degener, UNC-Chapel Hill / Health Sciences Library

D. Vendors Respond to North Carolina Budget Cuts

How are NC libraries’ business partners – binders, subscription agents, content providers – affected by our budget constraints? A panel composed of representatives from these businesses will offer their perspectives.

Eric Fairfield, ICIBinding Corporation
Kathy Brannon, Swets Blackwell, Inc.
Rob Grindstaff, ProQuest Information & Learning

11:30 – 12:45 Buffet Luncheon in the Trillium Room, The Friday Center
1:00 – 2:00 Keynote Address:
Cataloging: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Revisited

The library catalog is threatened with becoming an endangered species because cataloging is costly, sometimes ineffective, and increasingly in competition with newer ways of organizing information, from Google to amazon.com. This presentation will spotlight cataloging’s successes, and then examine various cataloging challenges, such as multiple versions, cataloging of electronic resources, and latest vs. successive entry. Solutions such as re-thinking the roles of automated systems, changing cataloging standards, and taking advantage of new technologies and partnerships will be explored. The presentation will challenge current assumptions and practices, raise more questions than answers, and encourage audience input about the future of cataloging.

Regina Reynolds, Library of Congress
