NCCU School of Library and Information Sciences

Inter-Institutional Classes

NCCU has agreements with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), North Carolina State University (NCSU), and Duke University whereby students from one of these institutions may take courses at either of the other three institutions. The Inter-Institutional program is designed to allow the students in the cooperating institution to extend their personal and educational horizons by taking available courses at the other cooperating schools. The program is not intended to serve as a cross-enrollment device; nor was it designed to compensate for gaps in the offerings of the individual schools.

A student who wishes to enroll in courses at other institutions and apply credit for those courses toward a degree at North Carolina Central University must obtain prior written approval of her or his advisor and the Dean before registering for the course. The student must receive certification from the Dean that the course is relevant to the student’s degree program and that the equivalent course is not available at NCCU.

This permission must be filed in the Registrar’s Office before the course is taken. The Registrar’s Office will then prepare an Inter-Institutional Form for the student to present to the registration official at the other institution.

Credit will not be granted for courses taken off-campus for which prior permission to take the course was not obtained. Forms to obtain permission to take a course at another institution may be obtained from the Dean's office.

Enrollment by inter-institutional registration during a regular term is limited to two courses per semester for a graduate (or professional) student, provided that she or he is also registered for at least three credit hours at NCCU. A Summer School student must be enrolled in at least one summer school course at NCCU in order to enroll by interinstitutional registration at the other institution.

A student taking a course at Duke, N.C. State, or UNC-CH through inter-institutional registration will be billed by NCCU for all courses taken. There is no additional charge for any fees associated with taking the course. Grading for a course taken by inter-institutional registration will be in accordance with the grading system of the institution where the course is taken. The grade will appear on the student’s transcript and will be counted the same as though the course had been taken at NCCU.
