NCCU School of Library and Information Sciences
Distance Learning Admission Requirements and Procedures
Admission Requirements
Admission requirements for distance learning students are the same as for the on campus programs in the School of Library and Information Sciences.
Students seeking to do graduate work at the School of Library and Information Sciences, North Carolina Central University, in either the Master in Information Science program or the Master of Library science program, must be formally admitted to the School by the Dean. The applicant must hold a bachelor's degree (or the equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree) from an accredited institution.
The requirements for admission to the graduate programs in Library and Information Sciences are:
- An undergraduate degree at the Bachelor's level (BA, BS, or equivalent).
- A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 for all undergraduate academic work (Exceptions may be made for applicants with relevant professional experience.)
- Two copies of the Graduate Record Examination scores, Graduate Management Admission Test scores (joint MBA/MIS applicants only), or the Law School Admission Test scores (joint JD/MLS applicants only)
All applicants must have taken the Graduate Record Examination, the Graduate Management Admission Test (joint MBA/MIS applicants only), or the Law School Admission Test (joint JD/MLS applicants only) within the past five years. Official reports of scores must be sent to us by Educational Testing Service.
- Two positive letters of recommendation
Exceptions may be made for applicants with relevant professional experience.
Special student status may be granted to individuals under two circumstances:
- Where a student is interested in exploring the MLS or MIS program.
- Where a student is marginally eligible. Such a student must complete 9 semester hours of coursework and attain a GPA of 3.0 or better for formal admission. This performance will be considered with the original application.
Conditional admission may be granted to a student whose GPA does not meet the minimum requirements for the program but whose other qualifications (particularly the GRE scores) suggest promise. To remove the status of conditional admission, the student must attain a GPA of 3.0 or better during the first semester with no grade of C in any course.
NOTE: Read carefully the catalog requirements and become thoroughly familiar with the information on the School's Web site when applying. Students are responsible for knowing and meeting all program requirements, even those that change.
