On Friday August 27th, friends and family of former Dean Bejamin F. Speller paid tribute to him at a retirement dinner sponsored by the School of Library and Information Sciences. Approximately sixty people gathered to give recognition to Dean Speller's 28 years of service to North Carolina Central University and his 20 years of service as Dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences.
During his tenure as Dean, the School increased three fold in size. Under Dean Speller's leadership, the School established a weekend and night program, an online MLS degree, and a second master's in Information Science. His most recent accomplishments include the establishment of a cooperative undergraduate degree in Information Science with North Carolina commuity colleges and the completion of the planning for a doctorate in Information Science.
Dean Speller was hailed not only as a visionary within the profession, but for his work in the establishment of the Hayti Heritage Center and his support of many civic activities and especially those related to historic preservation. Dr. Speller was presented with a plaque of recognition from the staff of the School of Library and Information Sciences. The highlight of the evening however, was the presentation of plaque of recognition by Dr. James H. Ammons, Chancellor of North Carolina Central University.
